With the Earth’s climate becoming increasingly uninhabitable, scientists attempt to transfer human souls into artificial bodies in order to preserve the human race. 049, the only successful experiment, navigates the post-apocalyptic world trying to uncover the history of humanity by studying different texts, media sources, and physical objects. After watching the tender relationship of a mother and son recorded on a VHS tape he recovered while searching an abandoned bunker, 049 is brought to face his overwhelming loneliness. He finds himself unable to progress living as he once had as his loneliness haunts him at every turn. 049 resolves to end his loneliness, taking on the impossible task of resurrecting humanity through the leftover artificial body left in the lab from which he was born. His failure to restore humanity drives him to madness, culminating in his attempts at suicide.
